FAQ
Does e-Residency give you Estonian or EU citizenship?
No. e-Residency is a digital identity, not citizenship, and it confers no nationality rights at all.
Does e-Residency let you live or work in Estonia or the EU?
No. It does not grant a visa or residence permit, and applying for or collecting the e-Residency kit is not grounds for one - you cannot use it to relocate.
Does e-Residency make you an Estonian or EU tax resident?
No. Personal tax residency is determined by where you actually live, not by holding e-Residency. Your company can be Estonian while you remain a tax resident wherever you physically reside.
Does e-Residency mean you can open a bank account without ever visiting anyone in person?
Not always. Some EU banks and fintechs still require an in-person visit or extra identity checks before opening a business account, depending on the provider.
How many people currently hold Estonian e-Residency?
More than 142,000 people from 185 countries, as of the program's mid-2026 figures, up from just over 135,000 a year earlier.
